Saturday 19/02/2012 – U14 Sportsmans Trophy, Portlethen V Cults

Portlethen: Jarvie, Parker, Rennie, Smith, Unwin, Morrison, Mackenzie, Main, Milne, Kidd, Cran

Subs: Thomson, Chalmers, Hay, Malikebu

Cults: G. Duncan, Gibson, C. Duncan, White, Gourlay, Hadfield, Philipson, Swan, Duthie, Mahdy, Webster

Subs: Rodgers, Caffyn, McMahon

Referee: E. McPhee

Portlethen started brightly and opened the scoring in the 2nd minute when CRAN ran onto a high through ball from Kidd and calmly fired low into the bottom left hand corner of the net to give them a crucial lead. Portlethen were dominating possession and Cran again went close in the 9th minute when he tried his luck from distance only to see his looping shot scrape the top of bar.

A minute later Main broke free down the right hand side and crossed low to Cran who fired his effort at goal only to be smartly stopped by Duncan.

Cults came back into the game and started to exert some pressure on the home defence. A direct run by Mahdy resulted in an excellent effort but was easily dealt with by Jarvie in the Portlethen goal.

Cults had a strong shout for a penalty in the 20th minute, when Hadfield’s goal bound header looked to strike a defenders hand. However, the referee judged the ball to be heading wide of the goal and the defender was out of play when he touched the ball.

In the 24th minute, some dogged work down the right hand channel by Morrison resulted in a Portlethen corner. From the resulting corner Parker hit the bar with the rebound falling to the feet of MORRISON. He kept his composure to fire home from close range and double Portlethen's advantage.

Just before half time, Rennie broke out from the back and tested the keeper with a stinging left foot drive but could not add to their lead.

Half time Portlethen 2 Cults 0

Portlethen started the second half in explosive style with Main bursting through on goal only to be denied by an excellent save from Duncan.

In the 53rd minute, a long throw into the box caused problems for the Cults defence and Parker almost caught the keeper out with a delicate lob.

Cults began to create more chances as they pushed forward to get on the score sheet. Chances fell to Swan and Philipson who were both denied by good saves from Jarvie. Cults thought they had pulled one back when Swan broke through to fire past the keeper, but was judged to be offside.

With minutes remaining, Cran broke free down the right hand channel but fired straight at the keeper.

An excellent game of football with both sides playing to a high standard. Overall, Portlethen just deserved to progress in this semi-final and will look forward to playing either Oldmachar or Robert Gordon’s in the final. Full credit has to also go to Cults who contributed well to an excellent game.

The match kicked off in bright sunshine although underfoot conditions, even on the all weather surface, were quite slippy.

Both teams struggled to develop a consistent pattern to their play and as the half developed Oldmachar Academy began to gain the upper hand and created a number of chances. Dowds burst forward for Oldmachar and found himself through on goal after a neat through ball but his shot was saved comfortably by the Inverurie Academy goalkeeper Ryan Booth.

Oldmachar went even closer minutes later when a clever through ball by Mackie resulted in a shot by Petrie which struck the post with the keeper helpless. Oldmachar were in the ascendency as the first half progressed and only another smart save by Booth (who was having a fantastic game) stopped the deadlock being broken.

As the half finished with the match still awaiting the first goal, Oldmachar Academy had the better of the game and looked the more likely to score.

Half time  Oldmachar 0 – 0 Inverurie

Inverurie Academy started the second half more positively and began to put a number of passing moves together. The ball was being moved forward more quickly and Inverurie soon created a few chances.

Early in the second half an accurate through ball from Stuart Hepburn found Dale RENNIE who bravely beat the onrushing Oldmachar goalkeeper to the ball and placed the ball into the empty goal.

Oldmachar had a fantastic chance to equalise when Dowds ran through and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Yet again, Booth produced an excellent save to keep his side ahead.

Chances continued to be created at both ends until in the final few minutes Inverurie Academy centre back Elliot Taylor broke forward before playing a pass to Tommy LINTON who beat the advancing goalkeeper to score the second and decisive goal.

The match was played in good spirit throughout and on their second half performance Inverurie Academy finished as worthy winners and progress to the semi finals where they will have a home tie later this month against Aberdeen Grammar School.

Saturday 03/12/11 - U15 Gerrard Trophy, Hazlehead V Kincorth

Hazlehead : McLeod, Davies, Charleton, Wilson, Robertson, Kelman, Petrie, Bruce, Taylor, Milne, Thomson

Subs: Booth, Dugan, Lappin

Referee: A. Cunningham

Only a last minute change of venue resulted in this Gerrard Trophy semi final taking place. With the Hazlehead pitches unplayable, the game was moved to Harlaw and the game started at a frantic pace. In the first minute, Hazlehead forced an early corner. Charleton whipped in the corner and BRUCE rose highest to power a header past the helpless keeper.

In the 13th minute of the game, Petrie picked up the ball in his own half and dribbled the whole length of the field before unleashing an unstoppable shot at goal. To his disbelief the ball struck the inside of the post and landed in the arms of the goalkeeper.

Kincorth were starting to play some good stuff and looked dangerous from set plays, however they failed to create any clear chances. Hazlehead were now pushing for a second goal and a delightful pass from Petrie released Bruce on the right. He drove the ball across goal but the Hazlehead attackers just could not get on the end of the cross.

Hazlehead thought they had doubled their advantage in the 20th minute when Kelman raced up the wing and delivered a wonderful ball across goal. Milne met the cross and looked certain to score until Yates managed to somehow tip the ball over the bar.

Kincorth went up the other end where the ball was crossed in and BURNETT nipped in front of the defender and scored with a smart finish.

Half time  Hazlehead 1 - 1 Kincorth

Hazlehead came out for the second half flying and were ahead within 2 minutes of the restart. A ball forward from Petrie was flicked on by Thomson which released MILNE. He delightfully chipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to the delight of the Hazlehead players to put them in front again.

Hazlehead almost added to their lead when good passing across midfield resulted in a through ball for Milne who was well tackled just as he was ready to shoot. The ball fell for Thomson who was unlucky to see his effort fly just over.

Kincorth were working hard to find an equaliser and managed to force a few saves from McLeod however most of their possession failed to produce any clear cut chances. An excellent run down the left from Milne resulted in the ball being fired across goal. Thomson looked certain to score but the ball was just out of reach of the striker.

In the last minute of the game, Hazlehead's Petrie drove forward with the ball and unleashed a powerful low shot that the keeper held well. Hazlehead won the game 2-1 and will look forward to the final, where they play either Oldmachar or Cults.

Saturday 19/11/11 - U13 League game, Cults V Oldmachar

Cults: Fox-Gibb, Douglas, Larssen, Turner, Barclay , Corthals, Watt, Primavesi, Silvers, Wood, Odlin

Subs: Taylor, Paterson, Carrell, Low

Oldmachar: McNaught, Munro, Wilson, Reid, Yates, Taylor, Landler, MacArthur, Fraser, Mitchell, Stevenson

Subs: Moore, Atrough

Referee: E McPhee

Cults showed from the off they were determined to keep their unbeaten record intact.  As early as the second minute Odlin`s shot was tipped round the post by away keeper McNaught.  Cults were not to be denied and a minute later Silvers crossed from the left and PRIMAVESI shot low into the bottom corner.  The impressive Silvers nearly made it two shortly after with a volley which went just wide of the right hand post.   Odlin had a goal disallowed after straying offside.  In the fifth minute Watt split the defence with a pass to Silvers who then crossed for WOOD to tap in to make it 2-0.

McNaught was having a busy morning and again saved his team with a brave save from another Odlin shot. Wood did well to round the keeper on a one on one situation but lacked composure with his final shot.  Cults were camped in the Oldmachar half and first Primavesi then Corthals came close to getting a third goal for the home team.  Munro, Wilson, Reid and Yates in the away defence were coping well with the constant attacking moves.  But the inevitable happened in the 16th minute SILVERS making it 3-0 following a good cross from the right from Odlin.  Watt was dictating midfield and in the 18th minute he played a pass through the middle for WOOD to round  the onrushing McNaughtto then calmly poke the ball into the open net.

Half Time   Cults 4 Oldmachar 0

Cults started the second half where they left off with substitute Taylor coming close but Taylor had a great tackle to stop his shot.  Cults were still eager to press forward at every opportunity with Fox-Gibb having to be content to watch the game from his penalty box.  McNaught had two outstanding saves but could not stop LARSSEN from making it 5-0 in the 45th minute.  Two minutes later TAYLOR made it 6-0 with an impressive 20 yard screamer which gave McNaught no chance.

Oldmachar refused to give up and Atrough almost pulled one back by using his pace to pull clear of the home defence but Fox-Gibb stood his ground and the rebound went out for a corner.  Atrough again was through but Turner forced him to shoot wide with the ball smacking off the post.  Two minutes from the end TAYLOR capped an impressive display from the home team to tap in a cross from Corthals.   A sporting display from both teams.

Saturday 12/11/11 - U15 League game, Harlaw V Albyn

Harlaw: McCaw, McLeren, Soleman, Petchey, Rothney, Davie, Sullivan, Murray, Eddie, Kilner, Duff

Subs: Innes, Lamb

Albyn: Shand, Purdie, Dewhirst, Werb, Girling, Scott, Murison, Cooper, Brumfield, Clarkson, McKnight

Subs: White, Dick

Referee: S Donald

Both teams in the U15 CNR league were looking for their first league win of the season, in what was anticipated to be a close encounter at Groats road. Playing conditions were poor with the muddy pitch making it hard to play much passing football, however it was Albyn who started the smarter. Following a short corner on the left, Brumfield crossed to Purdie whos header ended up in the back of the net. Referee Donald blew for a free kick as goalkeeper McCaw appeared to have the ball in his hands. McCaw again saved, this time from a Brumfield header.

With 10minutes gone Albyn were pushing for the opening goal and again had the ball in the net. Clarkson finished well from outside the box but play was pulled back for an offside infringement. Following this, Harlaw began taking a hold of the game.

A dangerous free kick from the half way line missed everyone and fell to the feet of Kilner in the middle of the goals. He looked set to score but Shand saved well. At the other end, Albyn Centre forward Clarkson controlled well and hooked the ball round the corner. This time SCOTT broke the offside trap and rounded the keeper. After his first attempt was blocked off the line from a covering defender, he showed great composure in slotting his second attempt home from a tight angle. Harlaw then had a flurry of chances, with Albyn struggling to clear out of their half. Petchy firstly pulled the ball just past the left hand post. Harlaw players were then appealing for a penalty as the ball appeared to strike Dewhirst on the hand. Soon after this they did have the equaliser. Following another free kick on the half way line, 3 players slid in with an attempt to win the ball in the Albyn box, the ball broke kindly to KILNER who reacted first and slid the ball into an open goal. With Harlaw now fully in control Shand had to save well from a one on one.

                                                                              Half Time  Harlaw 1 v 1 Albyn

The second half started as the first did with Albyn again the team who were on top. Whilst the Harlaw defence was calling for offside Brumfield should have done better hitting wide from the edge of the box. White then had a dangerous volley blocked for the visitors, the ball spun onto the corner of the post and bar and then to safety.

A minute later Brumfield was bundled in the box, penalty. Scott stepped up to the responsibility but dragged his effort wide of the left hand post. After 53 minutes Harlaw had their first real effort of the second half, Eddie fired wide. Following this Harlaw had a succession of dangerous corners. The first came off the back of an Albyn head, the second saw danger man Eddie head just wide.

It was a corner at the other end which saw Albyn take the lead again. After the ball was swung into the middle of the six yard box a number of players made an attempt to lunge for the ball, McKNIGHT appeared to get the final touch as the ball hit the roof of the net. With just six minutes remaining it seemed that this may be the winning goal but Harlaw dug deep and went in search of the equaliser.

Firstly they had a looping volley clear the bar from the corner of the box before snatching a point with virtually the last kick of the game. After Albyn carelessly gave the ball away in the middle of the park, PETCHY found himself in an advanced position. The centre half looked composed as he slotted the ball home and gave Harlaw a well-deserved draw.

Saturday 05/11/11 - U15 League game, Grammar V Hazlehead

This game had all the expectations of a top of the table clash between second and third place teams in the U15 CNR League but unfortunately those expectations were never realised throughout a fairly scrappy affair.

Grammar were the first to apply any pressure to either opposition goal but Hazlehead did well to soak this up with ease. A Grammar free kick from half way from Vegas in the opening minutes was dealt with comfortably by the away defence. This was followed by a mix up between Richie and Gosh on 6 minutes in the 6 yard box where they got in one anothers way to deny each other a clean shot on goal. Gosh also came close again two minutes later but shot wide from close range after a great run down the right hand side.

Another long free kick into the box on 11 minutes from Vegas was again dealt with easily this time with the safe pair of hands from McLeod. The break through came from the home side a minute later though from a well worked series of passes down the right involving some good close range interlinked passing from Gosh, Robertson and Burns finalising in GOSH scoring the opening goal from close range as he slid in to slot the ball past the keeper.

Hazlehead fought back almost straight away when a good run on the left of the pitch by Darren Milne resulted in a cross into the hosts box. THOMSON managed to get first to the ball and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper.

Some great play on the right side from the home team involving Robertson, Burns and Gosh again earned Grammar a corner on the left after the ball was switched sides but this was easily dealt with by the Hazlehead defence.

Another free kick to the home side put high into the Hazlehead box by Robertson was once again dealt with, with ease by the away side, this was however picked up by Gibson on the left who earned his side another corner.

Gibson himself took the corner and ROBERTSON rose above everyone in the box to head Grammar back into the lead.

Another free kick from the left by Gibson saw Mackie rise high above the defence but his effort was easily picked up Mcleod.

The next opportunity for Hazlehead came from a Charleton free kick. The ball was flighted in and after a scramble in the box, Darren MILNE was on hand to neatly finish into the bottom left hand corner to put the visitors ahead.

Robertson took a well driven free kick which looked like a goal all the way if it was not for the amazing ability of McLeod to rise and tip the ball over the bar.

Hazlehead had the opportunity to go in leading at half time when a smart turn and shot by Bruce in the box resulted in an excellent save from the Grammar keeper.

Half time Grammar 2 - 2 Hazlehead

To say that this was a game of two halves is something of a cliché but in this case it was ultimately true.

Hazlehead started the second strongly and forced some early pressure on the Grammar defence. A throw in fell to Thomson who controlled well before laying the ball off to Petrie whose turn and shot was saved by the keeper.

Half way through the second half, a shot from distance from Booth looked like it was creeping in until a great save denied Hazlehead taking the lead.

Another chance came for Hazlehead to take the lead again when a run down the left by Milne resulted in a cross which the keeper could only just keep out. The ball fell for Petrie whose effort went over although he was under a lot of pressure from the Grammar defence.

It wasn't until 25 minutes into the second half that Grammar had anything like a chance on goal. Riche was fed a beautiful through ball by Gibson but as he was away to shoot, Wilson completed a perfectly timed sliding challenge to prevent the shot.

Hazlehead eventually took the lead with 10 minutes to go when a wonderful through ball from Charleton resulted in MILNE bearing down on goal with only the keeper to beat. He kept his cool and calmly placed the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net for the winning goal.

Wednesday 02/11/11 - U15 National Trophy, Aberdeenshire V Aberdeen City

Aberdeen City: Yates, Swan, Charleton, Christie, Steer, Griffiths, Buchan, Petrie, Cooper, Combe, Burnett

Subs: Lechner, Pashley, Fraser, McElwee, Bruce, Dey

Aberdeenshire met Aberdeen City in the group stage of the National Trophy. The game played at The Haughs, which has recently been revamped and is highly, was an entertaining affair from the off.

Aberdeen City started on the front foot, forcing some early pressure on their hosts and winning a corner. The corner from Griffiths was floated in and Cameron CHRISTIE rose well in the box to nod home to put Aberdeen city in the lead.

Within ten minutes of the opening goal 'Shire were level. A swift break down the right resulted in the ball being played across the pitch. A slip by the Aberdeen City defender allowed Aaron Garden to bear down on goal and unleash a powerful shot, which was saved well by Grant Yates. The rebound fell to Dugan SCOTT who made no mistake with the rebound.

Aberdeen City started to find their feet again with some decent football and retook the lead when a Stuart Charleton pass from defence found Calum BUCHAN, who drove forward before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net from 25 yards out.

Half time Aberdeenshire 1 - 2 Aberdeen City

The home side started stronger at the start of the second half and were putting pressure on the Aberdeen defence. Aberdeen City had a chance to add to their lead when a quick breakaway found Zack Griffiths who fired in a shot but the keeper saved well.

Aberdeenshire were given the opportunity to draw level from the penalty spot when the referee adjudged that Finlay Swan had handled the ball in the area. The decision looked slightly harsh but Aaron GARDEN made no mistake from the spot to level the game.

The game then produced chances for both teams but it was Aberdeen City who retook their lead when Aidan COMBE showed good feet to get away from the defender before firing past the helpless keeper.

Aberdeen City then secured the game with little time left on the clock. A strong run down the right hand side from Cameron Pashley resulted in the ball being played across goal and allowed Zack GRIFFITHS to score past the keeper.

Overall an entertaining game from both teams at a great venue. The City side will be looking to add to their positive start to the campaign when they travel to Dundee and host Edinburgh later this month.

Saturday 29/10/11 - U13 Bucksburn v Cults Esso Trophy

Bucksburn: Gauld, Cunningham, Simpson, Birss, Hutchison, Black, Donald, Hampton, Craigen, Young

Subs: Milton, Cameron, McIntosh

Cults: Fox-Gibb, Low, Larsson, Turner, Silvers, Taylor, Paterson, Corthils Slater, Wood, Odlin

Subs: Primavesi, Cooper, Douglas, Morrice

Referee: J. Treasurer

Bucksburn made the brighter start of the two teams and created an opening chance direct from kick off where Black's ball was latched onto down the left wing by Hampton who's shot from the edge of the box narrowly missed the Cults keepers left post. Bucksburn continued to pressurise the Cults goal.  Both teams were pushing to find the opening goal and in the fifth minute it was Cults who almost opened the scoring.

Gauld had to be at his best to keep out Woods' 16 yard drive by pushing it round the post.  Both teams fought hard to create chances in the opening 10 minutes and it was Bucksburn almost took the lead when Donalds' ball over the top was raced onto by Craigen who rounded the keeper only to see his attempt on goal crash off the visitors far post.

Cults then regrouped and almost scored themselves when Woods well-timed volley crashed onto the roof of the Bucksburn goal.  In the 24th minute, Cults opened the scoring when WOODS latched onto a through ball down the left wing before driving into the box and slipping the ball under the advancing Gauld to give the visitors a deserved 1-0 lead.  As the half wore on, both teams pushed to get the second goal and it was Cults who dominated possesion for the remainder of the first half.

                                                                         Half Time Bucksburn 0 v 1 Cults

Both teams started the second half evenly and it was Cults who extended their lead when PRIMAVESI was put through and finished confidently driving the ball across the face of goal into the bottom left corner.

Cults grew in confidence and added to their tally three minutes later when a ball flashed in across the 6 yarder from the left wing was met by an advancing PRIMAVESI to slide the ball into an empty net putting the visitors 3-0 up.  Bucksburn regrouped and had a good spell of possesion for the next 10 minutes.  This spell of possesion resulted in a goal when the lively Craigin picked up the ball on the right wing and fired the ball across the face of goal for McINTOSH to tap in at the far post giving the home team a life line for the final 12 minutes.

With Bucksburn pushing forward, chasing their second goal, they were forced to take chances at the back, Cults almost took advantage of the increased space when Wood drove into the box only to be felled by a Bucksburn defender however the penalty shout was waved away by the referee.  Cults held on to the final whistle and record a hard fought

3-1 victory.

Thursday 27/10/2011      Senior National Trophy - Aberdeenshire V Aberdeen City

On a cold but calm evening, Aberdeenshire hosted Aberdeen City in the National Trophy group game at Bellslea, Fraserburgh. Aberdeen started the game positively and took a deserved early lead through Gavin SINCLAIR who finished well after being put through on goal by Liam McCall.

Aberdeenshire equalised from the penalty spot when the home side’s striker was taken down by the advancing keeper. The penalty was saved by keeper Alex Henderson. However, the joy was short lived when the referee adjudged that the keeper to have come off of his line too early and ordered a retake. The ‘Shire player scored on the second attempt.

Half time Aberdeenshire 1 – 1 Aberdeen City

The second half took a similar pattern to the first with Aberdeen on top and creating chances. Aberdeenshire looked to have defended well during a scramble in their box but when the ball fell to Greg ALEXANDER, he showed good composure and quick feet to put the visitors ahead again.

Better was to follow for Aberdeen City when a nice move down the right was crossed in by Scott Davie. The ball fell to Max BERTON who made no mistake from three yards out.

However, the ‘Shire rallied during the second half and their pressure resulted in two late goals being scored to tie the game.

The game went to penalties and the home side came out winners on the night. Aberdeen will be disappointed with the draw and will be hoping that the penalty shoot out loss will not be crucial if the teams are tied at the end of the group stages.

The select play Dundee away in their next game as they look to get back on track to qualify for the latter stages of the National Trophy.

Saturday 17/09/2011       U14 CNR International League - St Machar V Westhill

St Machar Academy:  Guajardo, Webster, Rennie, Low, Smith, Davie, Flores, Leslie, Morrice, Hall, Hay, Agbeotu

Westhill Academy:  Stephen, McDonald, Henderson, Fairweather, Duthie, McCall, Murray, Ajayi, Brown, Oray, Donald, Forno

Referee: S. Donald

Westhill began this u14 league clash on the upper foot, despite beginning the game with 10 players.  AJAYI was causing problems in the St Machar defence and it came as no surprise when there was a mix up in the centre of St Machar’s defence and he rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home.

Minutes later, Westhill were on the attack once more.  This time a ball fed over from the left to DONALD and he swung his right foot at the ball and unleashed an unstoppable drive into the top of the net.  Westhill were still making the most of the play and good footwork by McCall down the left flank brought a good chance for Ajayi but he put the ball wide.

St Machar then seemed to finally get into the game with Leslie firing a few shots from the edge of the box without troubling the goalkeeper.  A corner from the left resulted in an acrobatic effort from St Machar’s Low who seemed to be going for goal of the season, but Westhill cleared the danger through Henderson.

Westhill’s centre back Duthie made a surging run through the midfield, with his shot ending in a corner.  The result ended in a shot by Donald safely into Guajardo’s arms.

On the ascendancy, St Machar piled on the pressure and were eventually rewarded before half time with a great through ball by Davie which Hall picked up before skipping past Fairweather and scoring past the keepers left hand.

Half Time St Machar 1-2 Westhill

St Machar began the half in the same style as the previous and gave away a corner on the left.  McCall lofted a right foot cross into the box where AJAYI arose unmarked to power a header past Guajardo.

St Machar replied with Leslie showing excellent footwork on the edge of the box to fire a shot come cross across the face of the goal but there were no takers in the purple of St Machar.

Westhill then further increased their lead with man of the match AJAYI again working well to find an opening and completing his hat trick.

This seemed to spur St Machar on and they began to use the ball well with good work down both flanks.  The St Machar captain fought well at the edge of the box and threaded a pass through to LESLIE who took one touch out of his feet and thumped the ball past Stephen.  Agbeotu got a ball into the box after a jinking run but Reid’s shot was calmly collected by Stephen above his head.  Flores was next to get into the box and he his effort went just past the post.

A quick one two between Webster and Morrice resulted in the latter surging up the field and urging his team forward. The pass out left to Flores was controlled well and given inside to Davie.  His cross fell to the feet of REID who made no mistake with his finish into the net.

There was no time for St Machar to continue the pressure and Westhill reached top of the league after an entertaining game.

Saturday 10/09/2011       U14 CNR International League - Hazlehead V Bucksburn

Hazlehead: Melvin, Cheyne, C. Armstrong, R. Armstrong, McDonald, Jopp, Strachan, Robertson, Masson, Macgregor, Milne

Subs: Lush, Brown, Dallas

Bucksburn: Irvine, Green, Hunter, Spence, Williams, Calder-Hamilton, Cochrane, Still, Turjillo, Farquharson, Davies

Referee: S. Donald

In a highly entertaining game at a wet Hazlehead, Hazlehead hosted Bucksburn in the Under 14 CNR International league.

The game sprung into life in the 3rd minute when Hazlehead’s Milne was put through on goal by a fantastic through ball by Macgregor but could only shoot into the side netting from a tight angle.

Bucksburn broke the deadlock in the 6th minute when the ball fell for DAVIES on the edge of the box, who turned and struck a powerful shot that the keeper got a hand to but could not keep out of the net.

Hazlehead came back strongly and were unlucky not to equalise when a Jopp free kick was fired across goal but no player could get on the end of it. In the 22nd minute, a short corner by Hazlehead was whipped in towards the back post by STRACHAN which somehow avoided every player to find a way into the corner of the net.

Hazlehead thought they had taken the lead in the 26th minute when they had the ball in the back of the net but the game was pulled back by the referee as the ball was judged to be out of play. On the stroke of half time, Bucksburn had a great chance to go in with a lead after a through ball by Davies found Farquharson 1 on 1 with the keeper. However Melvin saved well with his feet.

                                                                        Half time Hazlehead 1 - 1 Bucksburn

Hazlehead started the second half determined to go in to the lead. A headed flick from Milne allowed Macgregor to shoot at goal. This lead to a series of corners but the Bucksburn defence stood firm.

Hazlehead were in the ascendancy as they forced Bucksburn on to the back foot. Irvine, in the Bucksburn goal, saved well from Milne and Macgregor as the home side attempted to make the breakthrough.

Good battling qualities from Masson at the heart of midfield allowed Milne to drive forward and fire across goal. The effort was deflected into the back of the net by the unfortunate Bucksburn defender.

Hazlehead continued to dominate the game and Milne was unlucky to see his effort go over the bar after a fantastic cross by Jopp.

There looked to be some late drama as Bucksburn forced a corner in injury time. There were 22 players in the Hazlehead box as the away side looked to snatch a point from the last play of the game. However, the Hazlehead defence stood firm to clear the ball and claim their win.

An eagerly anticipated U13 Esso Trophy clash was played between Hazlehead and Oldmachar in a mild morning at Hazlehead. It proved to be an entertaining affair with lots of goals.

It didn’t take long for someone to break the deadlock when in the 2nd minute, a Hazlehead corner was delivered by Mackintosh to the awaiting FOSTER who rose well to batter a header into the back of the net.

Oldmachar replied almost immediately from the restart when Donald tackled two Hazlehead defenders before playing the ball through for DUTHIE who showed good composure to slot home from 6 yards.

Hazlehead continued to press the Oldmachar defence when Cowie made a blistering run through on goal only to see his effort deflected wide. In the 11th minute Hazlehead were rewarded for their pressure when Mackintosh took a short corner to Patterson who whipped in a fantastic cross where COWIE was waiting to bullet a header into the top corner.

The skilful Mackintosh was next to threaten as he made a direct run through the defence and watched as his shot agonisingly edged past the post. Both teams had chances to add to their tally but it was Hazlehead who extended their lead in the 25th minute when a goal kick was collected by MACKINTOSH who then delightful lobbed the keeper from 25yds out. On the stroke of half time, good attacking play down the left from Hazlehead resulted in Reid powering a header at goal but the keeper saved well.

In the 35th minute a through ball by Cameron was latched onto by COWIE who charged towards goal and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to increase the lead.

Oldmachar didn’t let the scoreline affect them and they continued to work hard and almost got back into the game through when Atorough caused havoc in the Hazlehead defence with a skilful run which was eventually blocked by Paton in the Hazlehead defence.

Hazlehead then broke quickly and REID found himself in space on the edge of the box and smashed a low shot into the bottom corner of the goal.

Hazlhead’s Cowie, who had had impressive display in the centre of midfield, flighted a free kick into the box where FOSTER headed into the back of the net for his second goal of the game. Minutes later, a Cowie corner was met once again by Foster but his header was comfortably caught by the keeper.

Subs: Malikebu, Unwin, Robson, Thomson, Milne

Two of last season’s top teams met at the early stages of the Sportsmans trophy on Saturday with Aberdeen Grammar looking to build on last season’s title winning success. The teams were evenly matched for the first ten minutes with little chances of note until a long throw in into the box from Chalmers was met on the volley by CRAN who fired low into the bottom corner to give Portlethen a 1-0 lead.

Grammar fought back immediately and only a timely interception from McDonald maintained the goal advantage.

After 17 minutes, Portlethen had to reshuffle the pack when goalkeeper Thom had to limp off injured with Smith taking over between the sticks and the first thing he had to do was pick the ball out of the net on 23 minutes after Tough flighted a free kick into the box and the impressive CUMMING headed low into the bottom corner.

Portlethen responded quickly when after 28 minutes MAIN rose unchallenged in the box to nod home a Parker corner kick to give Portlethen a 2-1 lead.

Portlethen were now looking more menacing and doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when the smallest man on the pitch MORRISON bravely headed home in a congested penalty box.

Grammar came roaring back into the game and scored on the stroke of half time when a break up the right was centred for CUMMING to head home his second of the game.

                                                                            Half time Portlethen 3-2 Grammar

Buoyed by the late first half goal, Grammar began to take a stranglehold of the game early in the second half without creating any clear cut scoring opportunities.

It was Portlethen however, who restored their two goal advantage in the 50th minute when set piece expert PARKER scored direct from a corner.

Grammar tried to bounce back immediately and shortly afterwards Tough hit an audacious free kick off the bar from 35 yards. Soon after McLeod felt he was tripped inside the box but the referee deemed MacKenzies tackle to be fair.

Portlethen put the game beyond doubt in the 58th minute when Captain RENNIE headed home from another Parker corner.

Parker again troubled the Grammar defence when he fizzed a dangerous cross into the box.

There was time for two more chances in the game with Chalmers going close for Portlethen and McLeod for Grammar but the game ended soon after with a hard fought Portlethen victory.
