ABERDEEN SECONDARY SCHOOLS FOOTBALL - THURSDAY ARTICLE
THURSDAY 16/02/12 As the weather appears to be heating up and the school pitches become more forgiving, it is hoped that there will be conclusions to some of the ASSFA competitions in the next few weeks. In the CNR International U15 League, Hazlehead are looking to go level with Cults at the top when they play Portlethen. The visitors know that a win would move them up to third place and keep them in with a chance of winning the title. In the U14 Sportsmans Trophy there is a rescheduled match between Portlethen and Cults. With both teams battling it out at the top of their league the result of this semi-final tie will be eagerly anticipated. Either Oldmachar or RGC will meet the winners in the final. WEEKEND FIXTURES - Saturday 18/02/12 U13 League - Torry V Bucksburn at Tullos I. Yule U13 League - Grammar V Albyn at Rubislaw U14 Sportsmans - Portlethen V Cults at Portlethen Academy E. McPhee U15 League - Hazlehead V Portlethen at Hazlehead Academy S. Donald
THURSDAY 09/02/12 It is hoped that the only game scheduled for this weekend will finally get the go ahead and beat the weather. It sees St Machar host Oldmachar in the U14 League. Additionally, many sides from Aberdeen have been progressing well in their respective Scottish Shield ties and this progress will be updated shortly. WEEKEND FIXTURES - Saturday 04/02/12 U14 League - St Machar V Oldmachar at St Machar Academy D. Yule
THURSDAY 02/02/12 Once again the biggest competition this weekend will be against the weather as no fixtures were deemed playable last week. There are two fixtures scheduled to take place at Cults academy, both for U13 teams against Hazlehead. Showing their strength in depth a friendly match will take place between reserve team players, and the semi-final of the Green Final Trophy will also be contested. The top two teams in the league will go head to head with Hazlehead looking to overturn their defeat from earlier in the campaign. The only other fixture scheduled is another semi-final tie. This time in the U14's Sportsman's Trophy Cults will travel to Portlethen. With only 3 points separating the two teams in the league it is set to be yet another fantastic match. WEEKEND FIXTURES - Saturday 04/02/12 U13 Green Final - Cults V Hazlehead at Cults Academy A. Cunningham U13 Friendly - Cults "B" V Hazlehead "B" at Cults Academy J. Treasurer U14 Sportsmans - Portlethen V Cults at Portlethen Academy E. McPhee (all matches 9:30am kick off) THURSDAY 26/01/12 Once
again last week, there were fixtures postponed due to the freezing
temperatures and solid pitches throughout the city. The only tie which
went ahead was a convincing 7-0 win for Oldmachar U14's against Kincorth.
This week two of the cancelled fixtures have been re-scheduled with the
pick being Harlaw U13's playing away against Hazlehead in the semi-final
of the Esso Trophy. Recently there has been progress made in National
competitions with Robert Gordons U14's now through to the Quarter Finals
of the Scottish Schools Sheild. After a 2-2 draw with Dunbar Grammar
School, RGC won 3-1 on penalties. In the coming weeks more schools from
across the city will look to follow this lead and hopefully progress
through to the latter rounds of their respective
tournaments.
WEEKEND FIXTURES - Saturday 28/01/12 U13 League - Torry V Grammar at Tullos E. McPhee U13 Esso - Hazlehead V Harlaw at Hazlehead Academy J. Treasurer (all matches 9:30am kick off)
THURSDAY 19/01/12 The bad
weather has started to take a grip on the ASSFA with many fixtures having
to be cancelled due to sub-zero temperatures. Last week saw on one game
survive the frost and only two matches are scheduled for this week. In the
U13 league, Torry will be looking to get their second win of the season as
they face Grammar who are currently sitting mid-table. In the U13 Esso
Trophy there is a semi-final tie between Hazlehead and Harlaw. Both teams
will be keen to book their place in the final with the latter looking to
cause an upset against the current league
leaders.
WEEKEND FIXTURES - Saturday 21/01/12 U13 League - Torry V Grammar at Tullos E. McPhee U13 League - St Machar V Cults at St Machar Academy S. Donald U13 Esso - Hazlehead V Harlaw at Hazlehead Academy J. Treasurer U14 League - Kincorth V Oldmachar at Kincorth Academy I. Yule (all matches 9:30am kick off)
THURSDAY 12/01/12 With the New Year completed schools football gets back in to the swing of things. At U13 level there is a league game between Torry and Grammar with both teams looking to find some form for the remainder of the season. Two intriguing ties are played in the U14 AFC Trophy where Portlethen travel to a Turriff side who will be looking to progress to the semi-finals. The tie between Oldmachar and Inverurie should be a cracker with both teams more than capable of performing well.
WEEKEND FIXTURES - Saturday 14/01/12 U13 League - Torry V Grammar at Tullos M. Molden U14 AFC Trophy - Turriff V Portlethen at Turriff U14 AFC Trophy - Oldmachar V Inverurie at Spain Park, Banks O' Dee A. Cunningham (all matches 9:30am kick off)
THURSDAY 22/12/11 As
the ASSFA shuts down for the winter holidays it is a time to reflect on
the season so far and look at who is in line for success in the New Year.
In fact all cup competitions bar one are at least at the semi-final stage
of proceedings. Some league competitions are also close to being completed
thanks to the favourable weather conditions experienced to date so far
this season. Here is a round up: Under
13's In
the Green Final Trophy, Cults play Hazlehead and Harlaw play Robert
Gordon's in the semi-finals. The Esso Trophy matches Hazlehead with Harlaw
and Cults with Inverurie at this stage. Hazlehead currently sit top of the
CNR International League, however Cults sit only 2 points behind as both
schools look to battle it out for a clean sweep at this age
group. Under
14's In
the Sportsman's Club Trophy the semi-finals are Oldmachar versus Robert
Gordon's and Portlethen versus Cults. The Aberdeen FC Trophy is the only
competition where the semi-finals have not yet been decided, however
Grammar are the first team to have booked their passage successfully. Once
again Hazlehead sit top of the league having played more games than
anybody else but Portlethan, Cults and Grammar will all feel that they
have a chance to catch them in them after the break.
Under
15's In
the Gerrard Trophy Hazlehead are already through to the final and they
will play the winner of Cults and Oldmachar in the New Year. The CNR
International league looks as though it will be between Cults and
Hazlehead once again, with both teams currently unbeaten. A show down
between the two teams will be hastily anticipated. Under
16's The
under 16 league is currently the most competitive amongst all in the
association with all teams having dropped points to each other. Due to
exam commitments many games are still to be played and it is hard to see
any clear favourite at this stage, however Harlaw could climb two places
into top spot should they win their one game in hand. In the
Association Trophy
Harlaw will play Grammar and Torry against Westhill in the
semi-finals. Seniors In
the J.M Low Trophy two semi-finals should be played in January. St Machar
will host Hazlehead and Westhill will be at home against Cults. The final
of the prestigious President's Trophy has however already been decided,
Grammar are faced up against St Machar with a date and venue still to be
decided.
THURSDAY 08/12/11 Match of the
day this week is a semi-final tie in the U15 Gerrard Trophy. Undefeated
Hazlehead face off against a Kincorth side who currently sit mid table in
the CNR International league. The previous encounter between the two teams
was a tight affair with a 1-1 draw the final result. All eyes will be on
this one to see who plays either Cults or Oldmachar in the final. In U15
league duty, Harlaw will hope to defeat Portlethen and jump above them
into 4th place. In the U14 section there is a foot of the table clash
between Torry and Kincorth. Looking for their first win of the season,
Torry could join level with their opponents on Saturday afternoon with 3
points. Grammar still have an outside chance of catching the leading pack
at the top of the league and will be keen to beat St Machar to have any
chance of league success. In the U13 league there is just one fixture
being played, Kincorth are at home to Oldmachar and know that a win can
move them up 3 places in the table.

THURSDAY 24/11/11 In
representative football recently the senior select won 11-3 against perth
and kinross to secure progress into quarter final of their national
trophy. The U15 select drew 0-0 with Dundee, added to their 4-2 win v
aberdeenshire, means a point is enough v edinburgh this week to progress
into their quarter final. In the regional leagues Cults U13 will look to
close the 2 point gap on early leaders Hazlehead when they face Kincorth.
The current table toppers are away against St Machar. There are three
additional fixtures in the U14 league, St Machar, Grammar and Torry are at
home against Hazlehead, Westhill and Kincorth. Although Cults are not
playing this week they appear to be the only team who are likely to catch
Hazlehead at this stage.

THURSDAY 17/11/11 With the halfway deadlines for the school leagues fast approaching, teams should now have played half of their corresponding fixtures. With the imbalance of games played so far, it is hard to identify at this stage who will end up being victorious. Due to this Hazlehead top the U13, U14 and U15 leagues thanks to the number of games which they have played. This week will be a chance for the chasing teams to try and close the gaps. Cults U13's look most likely to do so having yet to lose a game, this week they are at home against Oldmachar. A win for Bucksburn against Bridge of Don U13's would see their win ratio improve to 50%. The other game in the U13 league would see Kincorth draw level with St Machar on points if they can beat them. Kincorth will be looking to jump a couple of places in the U14's league when they host Westhill and Portlethen will look to get their first league win of the season in the U15's league when the face Albyn. WEEKEND FIXTURES - Saturday 19/11/2011 U13 Esso Trophy - Westhill V Harlaw at Groats Road B. Alexander U13 League - Bridge of Don V Bucksburn at Bridge of Don Academy J. THURSDAY
10/11/11 This week in the U13 league, Cults have the chance to maintain their unbeaten start to the league, and close the gap on current leaders Hazlehead when they travel to Bridge of Don. St Machar also play Bucksburn at U13 level in which should be a close encounter. The other league match in the U13 section sees leaders Hazlehead play against Grammar who could also catch and overtake the home team should they win all their games in hand. In the U14 league there is just one fixture being played, each team has only been beaten once but Hazlehead are currently a huge 18 points ahead of Kincorth who are facing a fixture pile up to catch the leaders. In the Sportsman trophy there are two quarter finals, Torry host Oldmachar and Westhill travel to Cults. Portlethen are the sole team to have made it through to the semi-final stages to date. In the U15 league Harlaw, Albyn and Portlethen are all seeking their first points whilst Grammar can draw level with the current leaders Hazlehead. Kincorth U15's have an intriguing tie at home against Aberdeenshire side Inverurie Academy. With both schools playing in separate leagues the outcome is difficult to predict, however the home side will be keen to progress and book their place in the third round of this years competition.
WEEKEND FIXTURES - Saturday 12/11/2011 U13 League - Hazlehead V Grammar at Hazlehead Academy U13 League - St Machar V Bucksburn at St Machar Academy U13 League - Bridge of Don V Cults at Bridge of Don Academy U14 Sportsmans - Cults V Westhill at Cults Academy E. Yule U15 Scottish Shield - Grammar V Portlethen at Rubislaw U15 League - Harlaw V Albyn at Groats Road S. Donald (all matches 9:30am kick off)
THURSDAY 03/11/11 The only U13 fixture this Saturday has Albyn travelling to Kincorth. The home side are the only team in the league with a 100% record entact, but having played only two league fixtures to date, they must look to win this and string together a run of good results to catch leaders Hazlehead and Cults. Harlaw will be looking to get their first win in the U14 league as they play at home to Westhill and the pick of the ties in the Sportsman Trophy faces Oldmachar against Bucksburn. Plenty of teams will have an interest in the U15 fixture between Grammar and Hazlehead. Both teams are joint top with Cults, although Kincorth could also draw level having played a game less. This is a real six pointer and the winner could well turn out to be favourites to go on and win the league. WEEKEND FIXTURES - Saturday 05/11/2011 U13 League - Kincorth V Albyn at Kincorth Academy E. McPhee U13 League - Bucksburn V Grammar at Bucksburn U14 League - Harlaw V Westhill at Groats Road J. THURSDAY 27/10/2011 After the October break the secondary schools football leagues start up again on Saturday. With the dark nights looming and the winter weather not far away, teams will now be looking to play matches more regularly on a Saturday morning. It will be whoever can become most consistent over this tough period of the year that will come out on top of the leagues. There is only one league game being played this week where Westhill U14's host Grammar. Both teams currently have a 50% win ratio at the moment so this is expected to be a close encounter. In the U13 Esso Trophy there are two quarter final ties, Grammar won their match in the last round 8-7 after extra time, so will look for a repeat against Hazlehead. Bucksburn are at home to Cults in the other Esso Trophy match. The only other match this week is a Scottish Cup second round tie between Cults and Albyn. Both schools had impressive results against Aberdeenshire sides in the first round, however Cults will be favourites at home in this one.
WEEKEND FIXTURES - Saturday 29/10/2011 U13 Esso - Hazlehead V Grammar at Hazlehead S. Donald U13 Esso - Bucksburn V Cults at Bucksburn J. Treasurer U14 Scottish Shield - Cults V Albyn at Cults I. Yule U14 League - Westhill V Grammar at Westhill A. Cunningham (all matches 9:30am kick off)
THURSDAY 06/10/2011 - No fixtures during October Holidays so a very quick review so far. The secondary school football leagues shut down over the next two weeks for the October break. It is a time to reflect on a busy start to the season and take a look at who is making a move in both league and cup competitions. Reminder to everyone that all league tables are updated weekly and cup draws are updated at every available opportunity. U13
Football Cults,
Kincorth, Grammar and Gordon’s are the unbeaten teams in the U13 league,
although Hazlehead currently sit six points clear at the top having played
more games. Albyn have improved to hold fifth position whilst St Machar
have only lost once in their opening five games. In the Green Final U13
Trophy, Cults will play Hazlehead in one semi-final while Harlaw await the
winners of Gordons versus Oldmachar in the other semi. The North East of
Scotland Esso Trophy is at quarter-final stage, with Aboyne and Bucksburn
amongst the teams that have already qualified. U14
Football The U14
league is the most competitive competition at the moment as no team has
started the season unbeaten. With the top four teams only separated by
three points, it is sure to come down to the final few weeks of the
season. The U14 Sportsman's Trophy is currently at quarter-final stage
with Cults v Westhill the pick of the ties, both teams having an identical
league record having played four and won three. Six teams have won through
to the quarter finals of the U14 AFC North East Trophy. Inverurie are
currently the only Aberdeenshire side still involved, however this is sure
to change after Banff play Ellon in their second round
tie. U15
Football The U15
league is gradually beginning to take shape with Cults, Grammar and
Hazlehead leading the pile. Even though they are yet to win a league game,
it would be silly to write off Harlaw and Porlethen at this stage. They
will have to play catch up and win their games in hand to compete with the
top sides. U16
Football In the U16
league teams have to play each other twice, meaning that a lot can change
over the course of the season. Albyn do not play their first fixture until
after the holidays when they face leaders Grammar whilst Westhill will
also be keen to continue their unbeaten record after the holidays. The U16
Association Trophy semi-finals will be confirmed shortly in what is the
only U16 Trophy being competed for this year. The semi-finals have a
deadline of January. Senior
Football The
seniors Presidents Trophy is always extremely competitive and the top two
teams from each section play-off in the semi-finals. As things stand,
Cults would play Bridge of Don and Grammar would play Kincorth. These
fixtures will be decided in the coming weeks. The North of Scotland JM Low
trophy has again been very exciting but produced a number of upsets, with
the Aberdeenshire sides coming out on top. With the quarter-finals set to
take place, the ‘Shire is represented by five teams. Whether Westhill,
Keith Grammar School, Inverurie, Ellon or Banff triumph over the remaining
city schools will be decided in the near future.
THURSDAY 29/09/2011 Saturday sees a full set of fixtures again after the holiday weekend. In the U13 age group Hazlehead will look to continue there impressive start in the league and St Machar will look to continue their unbeaten start to the season. Another close match in the U13 league matches Harlaw against Bucksburn with both teams having won one of there first three games. In the U14 league, in a potential league decider, the favourites Portlethen take on Cults. Kincorth will play their first league match at home against a strong Westhill team. The final U14 fixture is a mid-table clash between Grammer and St Machar. Cults who are flying in the U15 league have a home tie against Milnes High School in the Scottish Cup and Harlaw also start league duty at U15 level with a home match against Albyn.

THURSDAY 15/09/2011 A heavy down pour last Saturday morning brought threat to a number of ASSFA games, it is hoped that the weather holds up this week to see a full fixture card consisting of local league and cup action, along with an early Scottish Cup tie. In the National U14 competition, a strong Cults team travel to Kemnay hoping to emulate successes which the school has had in recent years. In the U14 league St Machar play Westhill in a game that will see the winners join Portlethen at the top of the table, Bucksburn also play host to Oldmachar in the first round of the Sportsmans trophy. Hazlehead will look to continue their fine form in the U13 league when they play a much fancied Cults team. With Hazlehead winning their first 4 league games it is already looking to be a vital game in their quest for success. There are also home league games at U13 level for Albyn and Bucksburn who host St Machar and Oldmachar respectively.

There is also an opening fixture in the U16 Association Trophy where Torry will play hosts to Oldmachar and both the Green Final and Esso Trophies will be contested at U13 level. An eagerly anticipated match between Hazlehead and Oldmachar in the Esso Trophy will see one school look to book their place in the 3rd round of the competition, at this early stage of the season. Hazlehead have had a perfect start to the season, while Oldmachar will look to start their season well following a bye in the first round. Some teams are already underway having played midweek fixtures, but everybody at ASSFA wishes all teams every success in what is sure to be another exciting season. Pick of the bunch this week is the opening fixture of the U14 Sportsmans Trophy which sees Portlethen host Aberdeen Grammam School.
